No last call today! -- Habitat for Humanity Int'l 1 June 7, 2008

No last call today!

Officially, the national Home Builders Blitz effort winds down at most locations today – but not in Spokane, Wash. More than just lending our efforts to the local Habitat affiliate for a week of labor and intensive efforts, we committed ourselves to fully completing a two-unit duplex, and built our schedule to span two full weeks. So while many of you are winding down and catching your breath … we are just reaching our halfway point on the journey to fulfill the American dream for two worthy families.

At this stage (Day 7), we are proud to say that our two-story duplex is now fully framed, roofed and sided. The volunteer plumbers and electricians are nearly finished with their tasks and we expect to begin sheetrocking by Monday – on schedule to meet our June 17 dedication. Our pro crews are increasingly picking up help from traditional Habitat volunteers as the three duplexes next to ours are nearing or have been completed. It is exciting to know that on June 17, not only will our unit be dedicated, but six other units will be completed as well.

Kudos to the students at Washington State University who designed this project (including the other six duplexes). They have created a design that is appealing and unique – maximizing space and the building footprint – without sacrificing ease of construction or livability. Good job and we look forward to seeing next year’s design as well!
