Beginnings
After receiving initial approval in November of 2002, Habitat for Humanity Panama was established on June 9, 2003. Officially, their work in the community began in 2004. Now Habitat Panama has grown to supporting the development of two communities.
The goal of Habitat Panama is to respond to the needs of families with limited resources. Majority of the families served earn a subsistence wage and do not have access to the traditional credit system of their local bank. Habitat Panama is a self-sufficient foundation and enjoys having a series of activities and agreements in place to support their building goals.

The Houses
Habitat Panama has provided 89 housing solutions in the communities: Altos de la Colina, Chilibre, Kuna Nega, Gonzalillo, Nuevo Mexico. The organization builds houses made of block and metal doors, as well as provides proper sanitation treatment. The houses measure 42 m2. The mortgage loan is granted for a 12 to 17 year term and the average monthly installments are US$47. The total cost of the house averages between $7,500 to $8,500.

Statistics from the Ministry of Housing lists Panama´s housing deficit as 192,840 houses in 2005.
