Kids speaking out against poverty
Act! Speak! Build! Week is a student-initiated week of advocacy on behalf of Habitat for Humanity and housing issues. Act! Speak! Build! Week empowers young people to educate themselves and their communities and move people to social action. Young people, ages 5 to 25, work in partnership with local affiliates to plan and host events focused on ending poverty housing.
World Habitat Day and Act! Speak! Build! Week
Habitat for Humanity encourages your groups to organize their Act! Speak! Build! Week events around World Habitat Day (October 5) this year in an effort to emphasize the importance of improved housing for the world’s poor.
On October 5, 2009, please join us in support of World Habitat Day, as we raise our voices to say everyone deserves a safe, decent place to live.
If October does not work for your group, Habitat encourages you to organize your Act! Speak! Build! Week during the dates that best suit your group and use the resources available below to help make your voice heard!
Youth ages 9 to 13 can get involved in Act! Speak! Build Week by creating a visual representation of a poverty statistic, hosting a candlelight vigil, participating in a Welcome Home housing simulation or writing letters to their governor, house representative, senators and local newspaper editors. See our suggested activities in the resources section to learn more.
